Carmarthen is a busy and thriving Norman market town, situated in the heart of Carmarthenshire between the Brecon Beacons National Park and the beautiful green fields, rivers and woodlands to the west of the county. The town is renowned for the market in the precinct. Here you will find stalls selling produce from Swansea to Cardigan Bay, cheeses from Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, local organic foods, farmhouse salt bacon, sausages, delicious cockles from the south wales beaches and the renowned laver bread.

Carmarthen is a great place for shopping and can also boast all the big high street names as well as a good selection of quality local businesses. There are over 80 pubs in the town and many fine restaurants in which to try the local produce.

Carmarthen is Wales's oldest town with a history extending back over two thousand years. Romans had inhabited the area and built their westernmost fort here in AD 75-77, after that a wider settlement quickly developed. When the Romans left the town that they called Maridunum it became a centre of the Welsh community, there is evidence of a Celtic church dedicated to St. Teulyddog. Some one thousand years later in AD 1094 William fitz Baldwin and his Norman army arrived in the town and built Rhyd-y-Gors castle. The castle must have dominated the mediaeval town just as the Roman fort had dominated the earlier Welsh settlement. The castle has been destroyed several times in its history and has always been rebuilt. It was subject to a number of attacks during the 12th century, sacked by Llewellyn the Great, besieged by Owain Glyndwr in the Welsh Rebellion of the early C15th and beseiged again during the English civil war.
The Roman town's layout is preserved in the modern street pattern to the east of St Peter's Church, whereas the evidence of the Norman occupation, the Castle, is situated on a rocky knoll overlooking the River Tywi.

Activities/Attractions

Dylan Thomas Boat House - Laugharne
Dylan Thomas spent the last years of his life here. Now it is dedicated and a tribute to the writer. Visual presentations, literature and refreshments are available nearby. To commemorate the anniversary of Dylan's death in 1953, the boat house has recently undergone extensive restoration.

Millennium Coastal Path - Llanelli
The Millennium Coastal cycle path, part of the National Cyclepath Network meanders through approximately 20 miles of local coastline, passing through local areas of interest.
Places include Kidwelly Castle, the Penclawydd Wildfowl Centre, and the Loughor Estuary with views of the Mumbles peninsular south of Swansea.

Nearby Pembrey Motorsport Centre provides varied motorsport activities including Formula Ford, go-karting and car racing.

National Botanical Gardens - Llanarthney
The Garden of Wales is the first national botanic garden to be created in the United Kingdom for over 200 years. It is also an exciting new institution for Wales which aims to heighten visitors' awareness and understanding of the natural and manmade world. It is a place of international significance dedicated to conservation, horticulture, science, education, leisure and the arts.

As a landmark Millennium project, the Garden of Wales links the history of the last millennium with the present. It is set in the former 18th century regency park of Middleton Hall in Carmarthenshire, a 568 acre estate on the edge of the Tywi valley. The Garden enjoys a pollution free environment, spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and a rich cultural heritage.

Aberglasney Botanical Gardens - Llangathen
Spectacularly set in the beautiful Tywi valley of Carmarthenshire, Aberglasney Gardens have been an inspiration to poets since 1477. The story of Aberglasney spans many centuries, but, the house's origins are still shrouded in obscurity.

Aberglasney Gardens cover approximately 10 acres, including two woodlands. Firm gravel pathways connect all elements of the garden and wheelchair users are able to visit most of the areas within the garden.

The National Wetland Centre Wales
Stretching over 450 acres on the Burry Inlet, this magnificent mosaic of lakes, pools and lagoons is home to countless wild species as diverse as dragonflies and Little Egrets. Plus over 650 of some of the world’s most spectacular ducks, geese, swans and flamingos, many so tame they feed from the hand.

Families can have hours of fun in the indoor, interactive Millennium Discovery Centre and children can crawl and slide through the unique tunnels of Water Vole City.

During spring and summer months visitors can explore previously inaccessible watery expanses on our Canoe Safari or hop aboard one of our fleet on bicycles and explore the Millennium Wetlands on our Bike Trail. (Bike Trail open Easter to end October, Canoe Safari open Easter to end September. Both activities are available every day throughout the school holidays and on weekends during term time).

Or visitors can simply relax in the comfort of the Estuary Café and enjoy delicious home cooked food, panoramic views and amazing wildlife.
